Top Eleven Questions Regarding JSHS Band Participation
- Can I be in athletics and band?
Yes. It is possible to do both at Juan Seguin HS. Both athletics and band meet every day, but with proper planning through scheduling and good communication with the directors and coaches, many conflicts can be resolved easily. For more specific information, please see a director. - Do I have to take PE if I am in Marching Band?
No. Marching Band is a PE credit. - How much time does band require?
In the fall, the marching band rehearses after school every day with a football game performance once a week. Marching Band season is only as long as the football season. For the remainder of the Fall semester, each ensemble will meet twice a week after school to prepare for the winter concert. In the second semester, individual sections will meet once a week for the remainder of the school year. - How much does band cost?
The band requires a one-time Activity Fee from everyone participating in the program. This fee pays for a band picture, show t-shirt, 2 pairs of gloves, Friday night dinners during football season, most food and drinks throughout the season, and much more. Percussion and Color Guard will pay more due to the amount of equipment used throughout the season. This Activity Fee does not include the pep rally polo shirt, marching shoes, private lessons, uniform cleaning, or band trip fees. We try to keep the amount as low as possible and having done some research, we have not found anyone with lower band fees in the area. In fact, many programs fees are significantly higher. The band fees for 2008-2009 will be posted here soon. In addition, anyone who uses a school owned instrument is charged a $120 usage fee by the district. - How do I join the Color Guard?
The Color Guard is the auxiliary squad of the marching band and is open to both males and females. This specialized group hosts auditions in the Spring for the following Fall semester. During the Spring, the Color Guard participates as a Winterguard in local competitions. If you are interested in being in color guard, please contact a JSHS band director. - Do I have to audition to be in the band?
There is not a formal audition process. Your audition takes place every day you are in your junior high band class. Everyone who contributes positively to their junior high band program is afforded the opportunity to be in a high school band class. Regardless of your current playing level, you will be allowed to be part of the band in high school. - Can I take band in High School without taking it in Junior High?
Ordinarily, no. We consider band a continuous activity from Sixth Grade through High School. It depends on the individual circumstance. - How does block scheduling relate to band?
The band meets both “A” and “B” days, just like athletics. Depending on the semester, some days are full ensemble classes and some days are section classes (brass, woodwind, percussion, & color guard). - Can I participate in band for only half of the school year?
No. We require all band students to participate fully in both marching and concert band, but extenuating circumstances may arise. Please speak with a JSHS band director for more information. - What do double reed players do during marching season?
Double reed players can choose from Color Guard, Drumline or Front Ensemble, or a seasonal switch to a new instrument for marching. - Should I stay in band and be a member of the Cougar Band?
Yes! We work hard in rehearsals and performances, but we also have a lot of fun. We have parties, Spring Trips, and fun new traditions being built every year we are open. Each year will be a new and exciting venture into building lifelong friendships and a wonderful family atmosphere.
